musclemilk.jpgThis week I’m reviewing CytoSport Muscle Milk after just polishing off my last serving of my 5lb tub. This is the first time I’ve tried Muscle Milk, so I’m going to give you my thoughts on the product and the experiences I had with it.

Background information on me, I’ve been training for 8 years and am in my bulking phase. I’m taking in 3,400 calories per day, and training with a 4 day split. Other supplements I use are creatine monohydrate, Udos EFA blend, dextrose and casein protein.

My Experiences With CytoSport Muscle Milk…

What Is Muscle Milk?

Muscle Milk is an ideal bed time and during the day protein because of its protein blend of whey and casein, and not necessarily ideal to take post workout. This “EvoPro” blend, is what Cytosport dubs as “Nature’s Ultimate Anabolic Protein - Amino Blend”. Why is that? Besides the whey and caseins in this blend, Muscle Milk is patterned after human mother’s milk, which has important anabolic growth potentials.

Taste & Texture:

I put a huge importance of taste of any supplement…I mean what’s the point of a good supplement if it tastes like sh*t! I used a shaker to mix up my Muscle Milk and it mixed withe ease. There were no clumps or lumps and it did not have a grainy texture. The flavor I tried was blueberries n’ creme and it tasted fantastic! I expected it to taste more like casein products since it contains casein protein but I was pleasantly surprised. I mixed the Muscle Milk with both water and milk, as expected it tastes a bit better with milk.

Ingredients:

On the label it says muscle milk is a good post workout, but I tend not to agree with that statement. Muscle Milk is classed as a protein blend, because it uses both whey and casein protein. Casein is slow digesting, making it more suitable for before bed and throughout the day.

That being said, I followed the instructions and took Muscle Milk morning, post workout and before bed and had great gains! I used Muscle Milk for 5 weeks and gained over 6.5 pounds which is 1.5 more than my 1 pound per week target. Here’s the nutritional information per serve:

  • Serving Size (scoop) 2
  • Calories 348
  • Fat Calories 162
  • Total Fat (g) 18
  • Sat. Fat (g) 8
  • Cholesterol (mg) 3
  • Sodium (mg) 200
  • Potassium (mg) 595
  • Total Carbs (g) 12
  • Dietary Fiber (g) 2
  • Sugars (g) 6
  • Proteins (g) 32

It’s a well rounded nutritional profile. Usually a little more fat than you expect in a protein powder, but the extra calories seemed to help me gain more weight. The added fat also helps slow digestion, this makes Muscle Milk perfect for before bed. This saves buying an extra supplement (casein protein).

Cost:

I paid $49,99 for my tub of Muscle Milk. It’s a tad more expensive than some products, but after testing and seeing the results I think it’s worth it. Also I did not need to take my casein protein supplement while I used Muscle Milk which also saved me some cash.

Would I Recommend It?

Yes, I would definitely recommend it to people looking to gain weight. The additional calories and fat Muscle Milk prolong protein synthesis and amino acid update, which results in more muscle growth. As I mentioned before, I exceeded my weight gain target by 1.5 pounds while taking Muscle Milk without changing my other supplements, diet or workout.
